Since its founding in 1979, Medical Teams International, MTI, has broken barriers to health care access for people affected by conflict, disaster, climate change, and poverty. Guided by the approach that “Every person matters,” MTI responds with compassionate care and solutions to ever growing long-term refugee situations and residents’ daily needs. From managing Ebola outbreaks to conflict in neighboring countries, the organization works in partnership with community leaders and experts alike.
As the lead health partner for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Uganda, MTI is on the front lines of emergency health services, offering extensive programs in Uganda.
With UNFCU Foundation’s support, MTI will strengthen local health systems by working alongside Uganda’s District Health Offices and Ministry of Health. Funding will specifically provide training and other support to a network of Village Health Teams to promote health and hygiene messages among their neighbors. It will also provide a continuum of care from entry points at border crossings to reception centers, settlement-based mobile facilities, primary care clinics, and district-level and national referral hospitals. Goals include decreasing morbidity and mortality rates in eight refugee settlements in Uganda. The partnership with UNFCU Foundation focuses on reducing HIV/AIDS transmissions and improving access to comprehensive reproductive, maternal, and newborn healthcare, as well as ensuring lifesaving primary care among refugees and host populations.
