Certification in organic farming and connecting to marketplaces are not always within reach for rural women farmers. We support the path to increase women’s capacity to offset local food insecurity and tap directly into global demand through our partner MCODE.
Mission for Community Development (MCODE) is a nonprofit organization engaged in the development and empowerment of rural communities in Central Uganda. MCODE builds the capacity of vulnerable women through technical training with a special focus on organic farming to improve food production for nutritional and income generation. Beyond formal education, MCODE also provides access to health care, clean water, and sanitation. Since 2009, it has worked to enhance the socio-economic status of the most vulnerable, including those affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS.
With UNFCU Foundation’s support, MCODE will equip 250 girls with training sessions at an Organic Demonstration Farm and Training Center. In gaining agricultural skills for the production of vegetables and bananas, each will be eligible to receive certification by DIT, a Ugandan Ministry of Education accredited institute. Building on existing initiatives to help women farmers, the funding will connect participants to a local horticulture company to market the produce.
